QOTW: Divergent

And… Yes I’m back on Instagram with a new app (piclabhd) and a new editing style. You many notice a lack of QOTW posts here for the past couple months – that’s because I haven’t been editing (opps).

Although there’ll be regular posts again, I’m planning on spending less time on social media. Time is limited and I’d rather use it to read than go online. It’d be kind of difficult though as I’ve been addicted to social medias for a very long time 😛

Anyway, I’ll see you in my next post (which will probably be a monthly wrap up). Have a good day/night!

Book discussion: Four

Book Title: Four: A Divergent Collection

Author: Veronica Roth

Genre: YA Dystopian

Two years before Beatrice Prior made her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation’s faction leader did the same. Tobias’s transfer to Dauntless is a chance to begin again. Here, he will not be called the name his parents gave him. Here, he will not let fear turn him into a cowering child.Newly christened “Four,” he discovers during initiation that he will succeed in Dauntless. Initiation is only the beginning, though; Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. His decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future—and the future of the entire faction system.

Two years later, Four is poised to take action, but the course is still unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might change all that. With her, the way to righting their world might become clear. With her, it might become possible to be Tobias once again.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth comes a companion volume to the worldwide bestselling divergent series, told from the per-spective of the immensely popular character Tobias. The four pieces included here—The Transfer, The Initiate, The Son, and The Traitor—plus three additional exclusive scenes, give readers an electrifying glimpse into the history and heart of Tobias, and set the stage for the epic saga of the Divergent trilogy.

– Goodreads

I bought the novellas separately on Amazon. I remember buying Four: the Transfer immediately when it came out because I REALLY want to know more about Tobias Eaton.

I love novellas as they give me a different perspective on events happening in the book. It’s always interesting, knowing how different characters interpret their conversations, how different characters see the same situation.

Free four retells the knife-throwing scene from Tobias’ point of view, which gives us reader an idea why he needed to do that. I was mad at Four for hurting Tris when I was reading Divergent, but now, being presented the motive behind, I understand it.

Four, despite of being incredible by Dauntless standards, is in fact not an outgoing person. His secret of being Marcus’ son creates an invisible barrier between himself and other initiates. He isolates himself because he is afraid of what others would think of him once his secret was spilled.

I feel like life in Abnegation symbolises our childhood in some way, where drinking etc. is not allowed. Dauntless is our life after we’ve come of age – alcohol, tattoo, all this craziness. Of course it is a stereotypical description of an adult’s life. I’d like to treat them as a symbolism – it symbolises those ‘new stuff’ we encounter in our life. Sometimes we feel insecure when we try new things or socialise with people, but we have to pluck up the courage. Everything has its first time.

I didn’t realise that Tobias has contributed a lot in finding out what Jeanine Matthews was up to. I was too focused on the Initiation and Tris in Divergent I didn’t pay much attention to Four. His persistence on investigation despite of the threatenings from his leader earned my respect. His act of doing what is right and just despite of repressions demonstrates true bravery.

As a side note, Veronica Roth writes REALLY GOOD quotes. I’ve read books where there are not many inspirational quote but even in her short stories, quotes are everywhere.

So those are my thoughts on Four: A Divergent Collection. What do you think ? Did it change how you see Four? Well it definitely did, for me. Leave a comment down below!

Tobias’ Tattoo Inspired Fan Art

I was reading Four: The Son when I came across this line:

the Dauntless flames being cupped by Abnegation hands, the Amity tree roots growing beneath an Erudite eye, which is balanced under the Candor scales.

It seems that, unlike the current design, where each of the faction symbols is ‘wrapped’ by a circle, they should be linked together. So I got this idea of recreating Tobias’ tattoo. I did not draw it 100% according to the description though:

1st draft

2nd draft

And then I went on my computer and outlined it with Paint.net

Finally, I coloured it with my phone

Actually, I like the black and white version more than the coloured version 😛

Anyway, it was really fun recreating the tattoo. I’ll get my creative juices flowing so I can think of more fandom inspired DIYs. Hope you enjoy this post. See you!

Emoji Book Tag

So I was watching some BookTube videos and I came across this tag. Basically, you have to describe and explain how you use your top 5 most used emojis and find a book that will go along with it.

It sounds fun, so without further ado, let’s get started!

1. The Laughcry Emoji (tears of joy)

This emoji is overused  Siy1dID(see?) I use it on anything funny and basically everything. I should stop Siy1dID

Anyway, the book I chose for this emoji is The Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Childhood memories 😀 This book is pretty funny, so it definitely made me ‘laughcry’

2. The Crying Emoji

I normally use this for extreme sadness and despair, especially during exams.

The book I chose for this is Allegiant. Obviously. SO MANY DEATHS

3. The Clapping Emoji

I use this to congratulate someone or be like ‘yay’ and also go like *SLOW CLAP*

The book I chose for this one is the Legend Series.

The characters are badass and cool and it’s action-packed. This series is SO GOOD it deserves some

4. The Unamused Emoji

Obviously I use it when I’m unamused. Pretty self-explanatory.

The book that go along with  is The Maze Runner.

I didn’t really like this book. Everyone rave about it and I was like  not my cup of tea.

5. The ‘Full Moon with Face’ Emoji (molester moon)

This come in handy when I have nothing to say or when I feel like ‘meh’.

The Lost Hero or basically the whole Heroes of Olympus series go with this emoji. I really like Percy Jackson but I can’t keep up with stories with multi-perspective, so I’ve only read The Lost Hero and I gave up. I’d rather have Percy as the main character. I don’t hate the series, but I don’t like it either, so

So that’s it! The emoji book tag! I’m going to tag everyone who has read this. Feel free to comment down below the link if you did it 😀

The Divergent Movie

I’ve watched the DIVERGENT MOVIE!!!

I watched it yesterday with my friends as it’s the last day of school before easter holiday 😀 I really enjoy it, and would like to share with you guys my thoughts on some particulars

The first and the most important thing is, Uriah Pedrad is MISSING D: He’s my favourite character in this trilogy, and fairly important, I would say, in the Divergent book – the zip lining, the offering-the-lap scene, the muffin-shooting scene etc. I was quite disappointed as I know the movie won’t contain these little scenes (except the zip lining) These are the little details that make the book enjoyable 😀

Because of my lack of experience, I won’t comment much about the book-to-movie adaptation of Divergent. The only thing I have to say is: books are way more better than movies. But of course, there is always something that I like about the movie:

I love how they present Dauntless – from the energetic jumping-off-the-train scene to the warm welcome for the initiates, the cheering, the clapping and their smile show how they are carefree, warm, energetic and exciting. It really gives me an impression that they are free.

Also, the introduction of Max in their dining place – We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another really accentuates that Dauntless is not a crazy faction, but a faction that respects and treasures courage against criticism etc.

Now onto the topic of the characters.

Peter and Eric in the movie didn’t really give me an strong impression that they are the antagonists, while in the books, they do. But of course, because of the time limit, some scenes needed to be cut, and that made Peter and Eric less ‘bad’ I guess. So now the really bad guy (more accurately, bad woman) is Jeanine. I love the scene where

Tris nailed Jeanine’s hand at the end. And also, I like how there’s a little twist – instead of Tobias shutting down the system, it’s Jeanine, under the effects of the serum.

My favourite scene is got to be the zip lining one. The moment

when she ‘flies’ through the cracked building – it’s perfect. ‘I am pure adrenaline’ I WAS at that moment

I really like the soundtrack, especially the song ‘Beating Heart’ Overall, I really enjoy the movie and I can’t wait for Insurgent!

This is quite a short piece, I apologise. I can assure you that more is coming as I’m now on holiday and have plenty of time.

Quote of the Week #1

I’m OBSESSED with quotes, especially quotes from books, so I figured I should post some here.

For the first ever quote to be posted, I chose to extract it from the Dauntless Manifesto, Divergent by Veronica Roth. It brings out a strong message, how bravery means standing up for others. I also think that bravery means standing up for yourself and your belief. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.

Just a disclaimer, the background is from google image and I just edited it a bit. Other than that, all of them are made by mee:D
