Book discussion: City of Bones

Book Title: City of Bones

Author: Cassandra Clare

Genre: YA Fantasy

★★★

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare’s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

A lot of people (including my friends) rave about this book. So I thought, why not give it a try?

City of Bones is the 1st book in the Mortal Instruments series, written by Cassandra Clare. There’s also a movie adaptation, and I watched it BEFORE I read the book (now that’s really rare). Because of that, when I read the book, the movie scenes just pop up in my mind. Instead of picturing Clary with my own imagination, I pictured Lily Collins as Clary. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I prefer imagining my own character 😀 Next time, I’ll definitely read the book before I watch the movie.

If you don’t know, Cassandra Clare wrote The Draco Trilogy and The Very Secret Diaries (based on the Lord of the Rings) using the name Cassandra Claire. I haven’t read any of them, but I did notice the similarity between City of Bones and Harry Potter. I did a little bit of research after finishing it, and found that she is accused of basing The Mortal Instrument on her own fanfic – Draco as Jace and Ginny as Clary.

Personally I love the shadowhunter world. The demons, runes, stele etc are really cool. However, I do not have a favourite character. None of the character appeals to me and I think there should be more character development. To be honest, the story is kind of predictable, even if I’ve not watched the movie.

I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars as I quite enjoy it and will definitely continue with the series. What do you think of the book? Do you enjoy it? Who’s your favourite character?
